SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell And when you have no energy, I mean movement is the absolute last thing on your mind. You skip your workout, you sit rigidly at your desk all day, you take the elevator.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. But that lack of movement is the exact moment the trap snaps shut. Because movement is what lubricates your joints, it promotes blood flow. So when you stop moving, your physical stiffness increases, which directly amplifies your pain. And by the time night falls again, that increased pain makes it exponentially harder to fall asleep. So you are just caught in this self-perpetuating loop of exhaustion and discomfort.
SPEAKER_00It totally reminds me of an old smartphone battery.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like if you only charge it to 20%, it dies faster the next day, which forces the whole system to work harder, and the battery just degrades faster and faster over time.
SPEAKER_01That is a perfect analogy. You are running on a degraded battery.

SPEAKER_00Let's dig into the food part first, because she gets really specific about the cellular impact of our diet. She talks a lot about colorful fruits and vegetables, which, yeah, sounds like standard advice, but her reasoning is fascinating. It's about vasodilation.
SPEAKER_01Right. It's not just eat your veggies because they're healthy. It is pure vascular mechanics. Colorful plants have high concentrations of phytonutrients. SPEAKER_01Exactly. If you feed the body inflammatory fuel, you are literally generating more trash for the night crew to clean up. You're making their job harder while giving them fewer resources.

SPEAKER_01Yes. Blood carries the oxygen and the nutrients from things like those majule baits. So when you move, you are mechanically pumping that nutrient-rich blood to the limbs that are struggling. It all comes down to intentionality. Is this choice giving my night crew raw materials or creating more trash in the streets?
SPEAKER_00I love that. But okay, let's be real. That level of intentionality sounds great in theory, but when you are exhausted, it can feel totally overwhelming. How do we actually put this into action?
SPEAKER_01Aaron Powell She has a very practical toolkit for this. It starts with creating a sleep sanctuary using the CDQ effect, which stands for cool, dark, and quiet.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Powell Let's talk about the dark part because I feel like that's where modern life just ruins us. We are staring at laptops and phones right up until we close our eyes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and our biology has no idea what a smartphone is. When blue light enters your eyes, it hits your master biological clock and tricks your brain into thinking the sun is still up, so it actively suppresses melatonin.
SPEAKER_00And just to clarify, melatonin isn't a sleeping pill, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's the hormone that triggers the whole circadian rhythm.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. It's the starter pistol for the sleep architecture. If you're scrolling in bed, you are chemically preventing your brain from ever reaching stage three deep sleep.
SPEAKER_00So we have to aggressively protect the bedroom, keep it cool, keep it pitch black, keep it quiet. But she also gives us these daily anchors, this 7530 method.
SPEAKER_01Yes, the great baseline. Seven hours of sleep as the minimum to prevent chronic disease, five servings of colorful fruits and vegetables for that vasodilation, and 30 minutes of movement to distribute the blood flow.
SPEAKER_00Okay, but I have to push back here. Because if you are someone in severe pain or you are deeply stuck in that vicious cycle, 30 minutes of exercise sounds like climbing Mount Everest. It's just not going to happen.
SPEAKER_01And this is where Lori is so incredibly empathetic. She warns against any self-judgment. She literally tells her clients if 30 minutes is impossible, do five minutes. If standing up is impossible, sit in a chair and just lift a can of soup in each hand a few times.

SPEAKER_00I love thinking of the brain like a computer here. Because lying in bed worrying is basically like having 50 browser tabs open. The fans are worrying, the hard drive is spinning. Writing it down is the physical act of closing those tabs so the machine can shut down.
SPEAKER_01That is exactly what happens. You are transferring the cognitive load from your short-term memory to the paper, giving your nervous system permission to let it go.
SPEAKER_00Okay, next curveball. The caffeine loophole. Because I know people who swear they can drink a double espresso at dinner and fall right asleep. Does caffeine actually matter if you can still fall asleep?
SPEAKER_01Yes. It absolutely matters. They might lose consciousness, but they are destroying their sleep architecture. Caffeine
Fuel And Movement As Energy Tools

SPEAKER_00So losing consciousness does not equal recovery. The caffeine is basically a roadblock for the garbage trucks. You wake up eight hours later, but your brain is still full of yesterday's trash.

SPEAKER_00What about exercise timing? If movement is so important, can I do it right before bed?
SPEAKER_01Generally, no. She advises cutting off exercise three to five hours before bed. It spikes your heart rate and your core temperature, which is the exact opposite of the cool, calm stu you need.
SPEAKER_00Oh, but she had one exception for that.
SPEAKER_01She did. For individuals actively managing glucose dysregulation, sometimes a very light walk after dinner helps stabilize blood sugar, but that requires careful personal experimentation.
SPEAKER_00Got it. Now, because this was the CMT summit, there's a huge discussion about breathing. Since CMT causes neuromuscular weakness, it can actually affect the diaphragm.
SPEAKER_01This is such a vital medical distinction. If the diaphragm muscles are weak, the lungs can't fully expand. Lori was adamant that if you practice good sleep hygiene and still wake up exhausted, you have to advocate for a sleep study to check for sleep apnea.
SPEAKER_00And that's where technology steps in, like CPAP and AVPS machines.
SPEAKER_01Yes. A CPAP keeps the airway physically open with steady air. But an AVAPS machine is much smarter. It dynamically monitors your breathing breath by breath. If your weaken diaphragm isn't pulling in enough air, it automatically adjusts the pressure to guarantee you get the right volume of oxygen.
SPEAKER_00Wow. So it's mechanically ensuring you have the oxygen needed to stay in stage three sleep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
